Picketwire Canyonlands Guided tours with the US Forestry Service are available by appointment. Tours operate in $15 for adults and $7.50 for children.  Picketwire Canyonlands is located about 25 miles south of La Junta. Tour includes the largest dinosaur tackway in the United States as well as petroglyphs and an Hispanic settlement.

Trinidad History Museum Opens for Season on May 1st. It is located at 300 East Main, 10am, 719-846-7217 gates open daily (including weekends and holidays) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for free self-guided garden and architectural tours. Museum buildings open, with daily guided tours, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the last tour leaving at 4:00 p.m. Bookstore/Trinidad & Santa Fe Trail Information Center are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is charged except for kids under six and members. Group tours are available with reservations.

  • May - Run for the Wall, a cross-country motorcycle run, will stop in Trinidad at the Welcome Center at about 8 AM. The run begins in Ontario, California, and ends at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. Run for the Wall will be in Raton Friday night and will leave for Trinidad on Saturday morning, May 20st., about 7:45. There will be 250 bikers arriving in Trinidad and the group will grow to 500,000 as it travels cross-country. This annual memorial ride stops in Trinidad is sponsored by Abate District 15 of Trinidad.
  • May - Trinidad swimming pool opens for the season on Memorial Day! And Memorial weekend Trinidad Trolley service begins and runs through Labor Day.

Santa Fe Trail Days Festival- On the second weekend in June enjoy three days of celebrating our Heritage on the Santa Fe Trail. Live Music, Living History Activities, Arts and Crafts and Food Booths, Car show, Petting Zoo, Historic Walking Tours, Prizes for the best Santa Fe Trail Costumes, Tons of fun for all!   • October 6 – 7 - "Explorers’ Encampment" at Bent's Old Fort. The park’s main living history event moves from the summer to the fall, and this year celebrates the explorers who passed by the site of Bent’s Fort before, during and after the post’s existence. Camps from Pike to Fremont and beyond will grace the site – joining the camps of Plains Tribes and Santa Fe traders. Over 60 living history volunteers bring the post back to life during this major event!

Mark Gardner, renowned historian and former Director of the Baca/Bloom/ Trinidad History Museum. Author of "Jack Thorpe, Songs of the Cowboy", Mark will entertain us with a Power Point presentation about Jack Thorpe, and...he will sing and play some of the favorite old songs written by the late great Jack Thorpe.
