Trails & Rails Trips

Narrated excursions aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief depart La Junta, Colorado on Mondays and Fridays for overnight trips to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Follow the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail up and over Raton Pass while learning the stories of people, plants, and animals along the way.  For more information, call

Allow for a full day hike and be sure to bring plenty of water and food.  The Canyonlands are pristine and remote and none of the area's rock art sites have been identified for public viewing.  Look carefully and you can find petroglyphs of meandering lines, abstract designs, and animal figures.  Contact the USDA Forest Service in La Junta at (719) 384-2181 for information.

Saturday, April 19th - Purge the Purgatoire - River clean up

May 1 - Trinidad History Museum (300 East Main Street) opens for season at 10am.  Gates open daily (including weekends and holidays) from 9am-4pm for free self-guided garden and architectural tours.  Museum buildings open, with daily guided tours, beginning at 10am, the last tour leaving at 4pm.  Bookstore/Trinidad & Santa Fe Trail Information Center are open from 10am-4pm.  Admission is charged except for kids under six and members. May 7-September 4 (Mondays & Fridays) -

June 13-15 - 23rd Annual Santa Fe Trail Festival, Downtown Trinidad.  Contact the Chamber of Commerce at (719) 846-9285 for details.

 

 

Mid July - Trinidad/Las Animas County Farmers' Market, located in the parking lot between the Chronicle-News and Coal Miner's Memorial Park in downtown Trinidad (Main/Convent Streets).  Every Saturday from 8am-12 noon beginning in mid July and ending mid October.  If you are interested in selling vegetables, fruit, or other food/gardening related items at the Market, please call Alice Fitzgerald at (719) 845-0025.

 

August 22 - 23, 2008

The Trinidaddio Blues Fest XIV kicks off with a pre-fest party complete with All Star Jam on Friday, August 24 at the Lucky Monkey night club.  Doors open at 6pm with music beginning at 7pm.  The Festival gates open at 11:30am on Saturday, August 25, at Central Park, with music beginning at 12 noon.  Tickets are available by calling the Chamber of Commerce at (719) 846-9285 .

SEPTEMBER

September / Labor Day Weekend - Las Animas County Fair & Trinidad Round-Up weekend begins with a carnival running from Thursday-Monday. Friday, a kids dress-up contest and cheerleading competition at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds begins at 5:30pm followed by a street dance with music.  Saturday, the rodeo kicks-off at 1:30pm followed by a bull fight and Wild West Show.  A rodeo dance starts at 9pm with music.  Sunday, the 4-H Livestock Sale begins at 9am followed by a barbecue.  The rodeo begins at 1:30pm featuring Barrel Man/Funny Man, Damon Rogers, and music entertainment.  Monday, Trinidad Round-Up weekend wraps up with the Labor Day Parade through downtown Trinidad at 9am.  For more information, contact Kristi Buhr at (719) 846-4540.

OCTOBER

TBA - ARToberfest - Established by the Trinidad Area Arts Council (TAAC), a month long celebration of the arts involving artists, galleries, individuals, and businesses in the community.  Events include an Artist Studio Tour, Trinidad Trash to Treasure, a Gallery Crawl, ARToberFEAST, Write-On Trinidad!, theatre performances, and a Masquerade Ball!  For more information contact the TAAC at (719) 846-1441.

NOVEMBER

November TBA - Kiwanis Chili Supper and visit with Santa at the A. R. Mitchell Museum (150 East Main Street, Trinidad).  Held before the Parade of Lights.  Call (719) 846-4224 for more information.  Part of the Hometown Holidays annual celebration.
